What’s tougher about Hard?

Hard puzzles keep the same rules, but with far fewer starter numbers. You’ll need to use the visibility clues from the very first move. Cells that don’t touch any clue line will mostly get solved last.

Don’t rush! Most Hard Skyscraper Sudoku puzzles take 18–32 minutes when you’re used to them, and longer when you’re still learning.

If you haven’t played the easier levels yet, do a few rounds at Medium Skyscraper Sudoku first. The strategies are the same, just with fewer givens. Players who already enjoy Hard Hyper Sudoku will have a head start — both belong to the "Hyper Sudoku" family of variants.

Two real solver tricks

  1. Edge elimination

For a clue of K, the digit 9 cannot be in the first K-1 cells from that edge — otherwise too many buildings would be hidden. So a clue of 3 means 9 is at least 3 cells in. Pencil that out!

  2. High-then-low spotting

A clue of K also means at least K cells of increasing height must appear before the LAST visible building. Use this to eliminate small digits from the very back of the row when the clue is high.

Hard puzzle game plan

  1. Step 1

Tap Auto Notes to fill all the candidate numbers.

  2. Step 2

Scan all four edges for clues of 1 or 9 — they place full digits or whole rows for you.

  3. Step 3

Use edge elimination on every clue of 2, 3 or 4 — knock 9s out of the front cells.

  4. Step 4

Solve the easy cells using regular sudoku logic (rows, columns, boxes).

  5. Step 5

When stuck, tap Hint — then keep going!

Common Hard mistakes

  • ⏩ Going too fast. Hard punishes a quick guess — wrong numbers ripple through the whole row.
  • 📝 Forgetting to update notes after a placement. Always erase the new digit from peers’ notes.
  • 👀 Ignoring the visibility clues. The clues are not decoration — they’re the most powerful logic on this puzzle.
  • ✅ Skipping the Check button. If something feels stuck, the most likely reason is a wrong digit from earlier.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hard too tough for kids?

Hard is really meant for kids who’ve already played a lot of regular sudoku and a few Easy/Medium Skyscraper Sudoku puzzles. If it feels too tough, jump back to Medium — there’s no rush.

Can I solve a Hard Skyscraper Sudoku without guessing?

Yes! Every puzzle on this site has exactly one solution and is designed to be solved with logic alone. If you’re stuck, the Hint button always reveals a correct cell.

How does Hard Skyscraper Sudoku compare to Hard Hyper Sudoku?

They’re close in difficulty — both add an extra rule to classic 9×9 sudoku. Hard Hyper Sudoku makes you watch four extra mini-boxes inside the grid; Hard Skyscraper makes you watch eight visibility clues around the outside. Most kids who can do one can pick up the other within a few sessions.
