What makes Expert so tough?

Expert Skyscraper Sudoku gives you the smallest number of starter clues we use anywhere on the site. The visibility clues are basically the entire solving engine for the first half of the puzzle. You’ll need to hold a lot of information in your head (or in Notes) at once.

But every Expert puzzle on this site has exactly one answer, and you can solve it without guessing. Use logic, take breaks, trust your notes!

If Expert feels overwhelming, that’s normal — even adults find it tough. Spend a few weeks at Hard Skyscraper Sudoku first. If you also play Expert Hyper Sudoku, you’ll already know the "max constraint" mindset that Expert puzzles need.

Techniques worth memorising

  • 🔢 Edge elimination on every clue of 2, 3 or 4
  • 🪜 Staircase logic on clues of 8 or 9 (long forced runs)
  • 🔁 Pair-clue reasoning when both ends of a row have clues
  • ✏️ Naked pairs and naked triples in rows, columns and 3×3 boxes
  • 🔢 Pointing pairs: when a digit can only fit in two cells of a box, both on the same row, the digit is locked on that row

Expert solving routine

  1. Auto Notes first

Tap it the moment the puzzle loads. You will see every candidate digit at a glance.

  2. Place every "1" and "9" clue

These are free placements. A 1 means 9 is at the edge; a 9 means the row is 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9 in order.

  3. Edge-eliminate every other clue

For each remaining clue K, knock 9 out of the first K-1 cells from that edge. Then knock 8 out of the first K-2 cells. And so on.

  4. Pair the opposite clues

For each row, look at BOTH end clues at once. Together they often pin down where the 9 has to be.

  5. Sudoku finish

Once the visibility clues have done their work, classic sudoku logic finishes the rest.

When you’ve mastered Expert

Once Expert Skyscraper Sudoku feels comfortable, try our toughest Expert Hyper Sudoku — same family, but the extra rule lives inside the grid instead of outside. Many of the same logic patterns work on both.

Or try X-Sudoku for puzzles that replace the visibility clues with two diagonals, Killer Sudoku for puzzles that add cage sums, Thermo Sudoku for puzzles with thermometer shapes, or Jigsaw Sudoku for puzzles with wiggly regions instead of 3×3 boxes. Very different puzzles, all built on the same "one of each in every region" idea.
