What changes on Medium?

Medium Skyscraper Sudoku drops about a quarter of the starter numbers you saw on Easy. Now the visibility clues do more of the heavy lifting. Don’t panic — every Medium puzzle on this site still has exactly one solution, and you can always find it using logic alone.

If Medium feels like a big jump from Easy, that’s normal. Most kids spend a couple of weeks at Easy before Medium starts to feel comfortable. Need a refresher on the rules? The Skyscraper Sudoku page has the full walk-through with worked examples. And if you’ve already played our Hyper Sudoku, you’ll feel right at home — same family of puzzles, same kid-friendly tools.

Three clue tricks to try

  1. The "1" rule

Any edge with a clue of 1 means a 9 sits next to it. Always place these first — they’re free moves.

  2. The "2" rule

A clue of 2 means the 9 cannot be in the very first cell. The 9 is somewhere further in, with only one shorter building in front of it.

  3. The pair rule

When the two clues at opposite ends of a row are BOTH small (like 2 and 2), the 9 is near the middle. When one is 1 and the other is big, the 9 is right next to the 1.

How to spot a forced digit

A "forced digit" is when only one number can go in a cell. On Medium, you’ll find them by checking three things: the row, the column, the 3×3 box. If that leaves only one legal number, write it in.

When two or three options remain, the visibility clue can break the tie. For example, if a cell can hold either a 7 or a 9, but the row’s left clue is 4, you can sometimes prove the 9 has to be further right (because a 9 too close to the front would block too many smaller buildings and lower the visible count).

When you get stuck

  • ✏️ Turn on Auto Notes — it pencils in candidates for every empty cell
  • 🔎 Tap Check to make sure every filled cell is still correct
  • 💡 Tap Hint to fill one cell (it counts in your stats, but it’s okay!)
  • ↻ Tap Undo to go back if a guess turned out wrong

Frequently asked questions

How long should Medium Skyscraper Sudoku take?

Most kids finish a Medium puzzle in 12 to 22 minutes. If it takes longer, that’s totally fine — use Notes and tap Check whenever you want to make sure you’re on track.

Can I switch back to Easy?

Of course — just tap the Easy tab at the top of the board. Your Medium puzzle saves automatically.

Do the clues ever lie?

Never! Every visibility clue on this site is correct. If a clue says 3, exactly three buildings will be visible from that edge in the finished puzzle.

Is Medium Skyscraper harder than Medium Hyper Sudoku?

They’re different challenges. Both add an extra rule to classic 9×9 sudoku, but Hyper hides its rule inside the grid (extra mini-boxes) and Skyscraper hides it outside (visibility clues). Most kids find them about the same difficulty.
