What is tougher about Hard?
Hard keeps the same three rules and leaves more empty cells than Medium. Auto Notes can help you track the possibilities while you look for a cell with one candidate or a number with only one place in a row, column or box.
Take your time. A cell with two candidates needs more information before you can choose between them. Try another part of the board and return after a few placements.
If you have not played the easier levels yet, do a few rounds at Medium 16×16 Sudoku first to make sure the basic strategies (number sweep, box-fill, 136 check) feel automatic. Hard relies on all of them at the same time.
Two real solver tricks
-
Naked pairs
If two cells in the same row, column or box each have exactly the candidates 5 and 9, those two numbers must occupy those cells. Remove 5 and 9 from the notes in the other cells of that shared row, column or box.
-
Hidden singles
If a number is allowed in only one cell of a row, column or box after you check all three rules, it must go there. The cell can still have other candidate notes — it is the only place for this particular number.
Hard puzzle game plan
-
Step 1
Tap Auto Notes to fill all the candidate numbers.
-
Step 2
Scan every box for hidden singles — numbers that fit in only one cell of the box.
-
Step 3
Place every cell that has only one candidate. Keep doing this until none are left.
-
Step 4
Hunt for naked pairs on rows, columns and boxes. Erase those numbers from the rest of the region.
-
Step 5
When stuck, tap Hint — then keep going!
Common Hard mistakes
- ⏩ Picking between two candidates without a reason. Look for another clue before placing the number.
- 📝 Losing track of notes after an edit. Placing a number removes it from notes in connected cells automatically. Tap Auto Notes to recalculate all current candidates when needed.
- 🔢 Trying to do the candidates in your head. On a 16×16 there are too many possibilities — let Auto Notes help.
- ✅ Forgetting the Check button. It can help you spot an earlier mistake when you feel stuck.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hard too tough for kids?
Hard is really meant for kids who have already played a lot of regular sudoku and a few Easy/Medium 16×16 puzzles. If it feels too tough, jump back to Medium — there is no rush.
What should I try before guessing on Hard 16×16?
Check your entries, look for single candidates and scan each number for a unique place in a row, column or box. Pairs can help narrow the notes further. If you need a hand, Hint reveals a correct cell.
How does Hard 16×16 compare to Hard classic 9×9?
Hard 16×16 takes much longer because the board is so big, but the kinds of moves are very similar. Most kids who can finish a Hard 9×9 can pick up Hard 16×16 within a few sessions.
