What is tougher about Hard?
Hard puzzles keep the same 3 rules, but with far fewer starter numbers. You will need to use Auto Notes from the very first move and rely on cells with only one or two candidates to make progress.
Don't rush! Most Hard 12×12 Sudoku puzzles take 20–40 minutes when you are used to them, and longer when you are still learning.
If you have not played the easier levels yet, do a few rounds at Medium 12×12 Sudoku first to make sure the basic strategies (number sweep, box-fill, 78 check) feel automatic. Hard relies on all of them at the same time.
Two real solver tricks
-
Naked pairs
If two cells in the same row, column or box can only be 5 or 9, no other cell in that row/column/box can be 5 or 9. Erase them from your notes. This is the single highest-impact trick on Hard.
-
Hidden singles
If a number can only fit in one cell of a row, column or box, it must go there — no matter what the other rules say. Hard 12×12 puzzles have lots of these once your notes are filled in.
Hard puzzle game plan
-
Step 1
Tap Auto Notes to fill all the candidate numbers.
-
Step 2
Scan every box for hidden singles — numbers that fit in only one cell of the box.
-
Step 3
Place every cell that has only one candidate. Keep doing this until none are left.
-
Step 4
Hunt for naked pairs on rows, columns and boxes. Erase those numbers from the rest of the region.
-
Step 5
When stuck, tap Hint — then keep going!
Common Hard mistakes
- ⏩ Going too fast. Hard punishes a quick guess — wrong numbers ripple through a row, column and box.
- 📝 Forgetting to update notes after a placement. Always erase the new digit from peers' notes (Auto Notes does this for you on every refresh).
- 🔢 Trying to do the candidates in your head. On a 12×12 there are too many possibilities — let Auto Notes help.
- ✅ Skipping the Check button. If something feels stuck, the most likely reason is a wrong digit from earlier.
Frequently asked questions
Is Hard too tough for kids?
Hard is really meant for kids who have already played a lot of regular sudoku and a few Easy/Medium 12×12 puzzles. If it feels too tough, jump back to Medium — there is no rush.
Can I solve a Hard 12×12 without guessing?
Yes — every puzzle on this site has exactly one solution and is designed to be solved with logic. If you are stuck, the Hint button always reveals a correct cell.
How does Hard 12×12 compare to Hard classic 9×9?
Hard 12×12 takes longer because the board is bigger, but the kinds of moves are very similar. Most kids who can finish a Hard 9×9 can pick up Hard 12×12 within a few sessions.
